Legal Reform

Asbestos Aid seeks to advance the course of legal reform for asbestos victims and their families.

In particular, we have campaigned for:
  • legislation requiring all employers to notify their insurance details to the Inland Revenue, so that this information will still be available if they cease to trade
  • an Employers’ Insurers’ Bureau through which insurers would be compelled to set up a fund to compensate victims whose employers’ insurers cannot be traced
  • introduction of the Compensation Act to award full compensation to mesothelioma sufferers, to reverse the decision of the House of Lords in Barker.
  • reform of the Pneumoconiosis etc. (Workers Compensation) Act 1979 to extend Government payments
  • reform of the Financial Services Compensation Scheme to award full compensation to mesothelioma sufferers even when the employer's insurers are insolvent
